How is this estimate calculated?

Node count comes from your route distance divided by the effective relay spacing for the selected terrain type — each option carries its own spacing, hiking pace, and water/calorie rate (shown as you switch the dropdown), plus one margin node, plus one extra for groups over 12. Once you've placed at least two points, terrain type is automatically estimated from your route's actual elevation profile (average climb rate and steepest grade) and the dropdown updates itself — pick a terrain type manually afterward if you know the real ground cover and it won't be overridden again. Each pin you drop on the map adjusts the node count further based on its role — waypoints and checkpoints add a node, an emergency muster point always gets its own, and a pre-placed relay pin removes one from the auto-spacing count. Estimated hiking time uses the selected terrain's typical pace — treat it as a planning guide, not a promise.
